Entertainment is that which gives pleasure and diversion. It stimulates the brain to realease seratonin and other chemicals. Often it hits on themes that the human mind evolved to react deeply to, such as backstabbing and murders. These themes are a part of the social world that the mind was shaped to understand in order to function in. This is why many of the same entertainment motifs have been recycled over and over again. For example, Scheherazade – a story in the professional Persian storytelling tradition – inspired composers Rimsky-Korsakov and Ravel to write orchestral works; director Pasolini made a film adaptation; and there is now an innovative video game based on it.

The word is sometimes abbreviated to entmt on fliers or in industry news publications when space is limited. However, it is almost never abbreviated to entmt in general prose.
